[ she loves hugging jake. she loves when jake hugs her. she loves when he returns her hugs. it feels right and nostalgic, warm in a familiar way and it's still new and exciting. jade loves that sensation - knowing that her family (!!!) is hugging her. her family! isn't that amazing? she can hardly believe it. after years in the game, dying three times, and losing everything, jade thinks that maybe this is what it feels like to have everything, even in an apartment supplied to you by someone else while you try to scrounge by for money.

Aww, Jake! You really mean it? I bet it's nothing like Jane's cakes, but I'm happy to hear that! Sorry about the melty bits, I don't really know what happened... Hehe.

[Foggy memories of his grandma tend to surface whenever he hugs Jade. But she's different, it's different, and that's good. He can recall being so small and the way she'd pick him up, the way he could hide in her long hair. But Jade fits against him, shorter but somehow so strong, the kind of hug that feels so real, so here and now and everything he wants. Making new memories with Jade doesn't erase the old but they fill him up with a warmth that he wouldn't trade for the world.]

Horsefeathers! I don't want a Jane cake from you. I want a Jade cake. I'm absolutely certain it will be the bee's knees.

[He doesn't quite pull away but he moves enough to look at her.]

Do you want to open your presents first or um...?

[ it's spoken with a little gasp, and then jade pulls away, prying herself from jake's grip to grab the boxes. she balances one on the other, and holds them like they're the holy grail; the smile on her face is so wide that she knows her cheeks will sting later, and she doesn't care. ]

Sorry they're not that great right now. I'm saving up for your Christmas present, too!

[ the first box yields a velvet jewelery box, the fabric black and the piping a rose gold. it doesn't feel very weighty, all things considered, and the piping feels a bit like plastic - it's easy to tell what's in it is likely costume-y in nature. inside is a silver skull, a notch in its crown. pushing that down pops it open, revealing it to be a pocket watch. jade thought the insides look like a treasure map, and that nothing else would be quite as perfect as this one. beneath that is a necklace with a cheesy message on it's cardboard backing, a polaroid camera with several rolls of film, and a scrapbook starter kit at the bottom. jake had said that they'd missed out on a bunch of birthdays and holidays, and well, he's right! so jade thinks that the best way to remedy that is to make the most of the ones they'll have together, and that means making sure to document them. little snapshots of memories, dolled up how you like. (don't worry - she's snuck a few sets of adventure themed stickers in there.)

the other box yields a shitton of bullets of different sizes, in different cases, all marked clearly. there is no gun to go with it (presumably because jade couldn't afford it, find one she liked, or doesn't know jake's preference and doesn't want to force him to pick because, jeeeez, that was not her favorite thing about her grandpa-related... arguments), but there is a cheesy wooden sign, that's ready to be displayed wherever and whenever. this gift is a lot more personal for jade than the rest - the island was home, but jake is family and jake let her live with him and dirk. he gave her family and a home in one fell swoop: so maybe she's not quite the religious type, but she does think that even if it took a lot of wrong turns to get here, she's #blessed now. ]
